さてアップデートだ。

yum-plugin-prioritiesプラグインを入れていると、アップデートされるべき
rpmのうち100近くが留保になる。

VMwareで7.1がインストールできん・・・。
7.0→7.1のアップデートはできたんだけどなぁ。

6.6（SLC_6.6_i386_dvd.iso）を
Oracle VM VirtualBoxにインストールしたんだけど
起動させてdfで見たら1GBもインストールされてないんだけど
こんなもんなんだっけ？

インストール時もビデオメモリ増やしたりしたんだけど

BT5R3で親指シフトをうちたいです。。左親指キーがずれたとこにあっていやだ。どうやって調整するんですか？

SL6.4が動いているマシンのHDDを取り外して新規のものに交換し、SL7.1をインストールしたのだけれど、
/dev/st0が作られておらず、DATでのデータ移行ができません。
システムディスクはLSI-loicのSASに、DATはAdaptec29160Nにつながっていますが、
SL6.4の/proc/scsi/scsiには29160N+DATが記載されていますが、SL7.1では
記載されていません。　29160Nを29320Aに変えても駄目でした。　SL7.1で使用できる
パラレルSCSIのHBAで適当なものを知っていれば教えてください。

SL7.1では「lspci」でpciスロットにある29160Nが検出されていることは確認できますが、
/proc/scsi下に　aic7xxxのディレクトリーが作られていないので、aic7xxxのドライバが読み込まれていないと思われます。
尚、SL6.4では/proc/scsi下にaic7xxxのディレクトリーがありますし、/proc/scsi/scsiには
DATデバイスがリストされていて、tarでDATにバックアップ／レストアできます。
　一昔前のデファクトだったAdaptecのAIC7xxxのSCSIのドライバがSL6からSL7になった時点で
排除されてしまうとは考えにくいのですが、手元にあるのはSAS-HDDばかりでパラレルSCSIのHDDは
もはや所持していませんので実験ができません。
パラレルSCSIのHDDにSL7.0ないしはSL7.1をインストールすることに成功している人はいませんでしょうか？

ディストロ(リ)のDLならriken.jpだよね。早くて速いし。

7.2はapacheやらbindやら設定がかなり変わったみたいなので様子見というかペンディング中。
DOM/SAX使ったXMLのエンコ・デコ遊びが一段落したら本格移行しようと思ってる。今はSL6.7で
i7なノートでvirtual boxとか実機家鯖で統一している。使い方もほぼSAMBAとSSHだけで使う
winかたみた外部鯖用途だけだから鳥はなんでも良いけど、sudo嫌いのservice使いなので6.x。
でもRADEONだとインスコ完了直前でドライバクラッシュする場合もあるからやや難ありだな。SL。

理研はディレクトリ構成が分かりづらい
たまにISO取りに行くんだけどいつも悩む

SCLってなんでインストール後に自動アップデートが有効になってるん？

Scientific Linux 5 has reached its End of Life.

After March 31 2017 Scientific Linux 5 will not receive further updates and the files will be archived.

The existing files will be moved into http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/obsolete/ for archival purposes after March 31 2017.

This will break existing yum repos and kickstarts using the official distribution servers.

Due to the size of the release, the 4.7gb Install media is discontinued.
We have retained the Dual Layer Install media.

Alternatively the livecd-iso-to-disk utility is able to convert

raw image to a USB device.

XPが入っていたCore2Duo（1.8GHz、メモリ4GB、HDD1TB）のノートパソコンにLinuxを入れたいと思います

Linuxを入れた後の用途はちょっとしたパソコンとしての利用なのですが
自分の経験上Red Hat系とDebian系しか使ったことがありません（あと商用Unix）
Ubuntuに勢いがあるっぽいので調べてみると
パッケージを追加したLinux Mintがよさそうに思いました
今のところScientific LinuxとLinux Mintのどちらにするかで悩んでいるところなのですが
パソコンとして使うならLinux Mintに決まってんじゃんってレベルで
操作性とか扱いやすさが違うものでしょうか？

にて次期版となる「Scientific Linux 8」の開発は行わないことを発表した。フェルミ
研究所は今後、学術向けコンピューティング環境として「CentOS 8」の実装を進めるという。

　Scientific Linuxは、「Red Hat Enterprise Linux（RHEL）」互換のオープンソース
ディストリビューション。RHELをベースに商標に関わるものを削除た上で学術研究用途で
用いるパッケージを加えているのが特徴。フェルミ国立加速器研究所が欧州原子核研究機構
（CERN）と協力して開発してきたもので、自らが学術や研究用途で使うためのLinuxディス
トリビューションとして開発をスタートしたという経緯がある。

　Scientific Linux開発中止の原因として、ほかの研究機関とのコラボレーションにあたって
土台のコンピューティングプラットフォームを連携させるため、としている。フェルミ
研究所は2018年9月、CERNとともに地下深部ニュートリノ実験（DUNE）と協力することを
発表しているが、これら国際研究機関との協力の一部として、「土台のコンピューティング
プラットフォームをこれらのラボや研究機関と統一させる」という。そこで、Scientific
Linux 8を開発するのではなく「CentOS 8」を実装することにしたという。

　なお、RHEL 6ベースの「Scientific Linux 6（SL 6）」とRHEL 7ベースの「Scientific
Linux 7（SL 7）」については、ライフサイクル通りにサポートを継続するとしている。6系では
2018年7月に公開されたSL 6.10が、7系では2018年12月に公開されたSL 7.6が最新版となる。

活発に開発が進められていたディストリビューションにScientific Linuxがある。開発の

la Recherche Nucleaire：欧州素粒子物理学研究所）と米国のフェルミ国立加速器研究所で，
RHEL 6をベースとするScientific Linux 6.1あたりまでは，ときにCentOSを凌駕する
スピードで開発が進んでいたこともある。

だがそれ以降は，チーフアーキテクトのRed Hatへの移籍などがあり，急速に開発ペースが

Scientific Linuxの開発に参加してきたチームが次々と離れていく事態となっていた。
2015年にはそれまでScientific Linuxをコアで支えてきたCERNもプラットフォームを

近づいてきたようだ。フェルミ研でScientific Computing Divisionのヘッドを務めるJames
Amundsonは4月22日（米国時間）⁠，Scientific LinuxはRHEL 8をベースとするバージョン
（Scientific Linux 8）の開発は行わず，今後はフェルミ研のプラットフォームをCentOS 8
に移行することを発表した。理由はフェルミ研が現在注力するニュートリノプロジェクト
「DUNE」やその他のプロジェクトに実験リソースを割くことを優先するためだとしている。

この決定により，Scientific Linuxは2018年12月にリリースされた「Scientific Linux 7.6」

「現在公開されているScientific Linuxの6,7については、今後もライフサイクルに
則ってサポートは継続すると明記されていたのでこちらも暫くは安心ですね。
RHELと同じサポート期間とすると、6系は 2021年 、7系は 2024年 まではサポートが
続くと考えられます。この機にScientific Linuxの名前だけでも覚えて、

私も折角なので、触ったことのないScientific Linux7を触ってみようかなと思います。」

Scientific Linux 開発終了という見出しは、誤解を生みますね。
当分のあいだ、従来どおりメンテナンスが継続されるので。

また、CentOS 8 ベースでリリース予定とされていても、
今のところ、どのような形でリリースされるかは知りようがありません。
Fermi Labo 向けにカスタマイズされたリリースが行われる見込みもあります。
これまでは、RHEL をベースにしたカスタマイズ版でした。

当面、心配は要りませんね。

Scientific Linux からリリースされた最新版は、
平成30年8月19日にリリースされた バージョン 7.7 です。

なお、似たようなカスタマイズ版として scientificlinuxCERN があります。
これは、CentOS ベースへ変更になりましたが、従来同様に独自な変更があります。
すでに、SLC 8 をリリースしました。

全くその通りで、これまでRHELのクローン（安定版）で普通に業務にも使えていたCentOSが
開発用不安定版のバクだしのための、CentOS Streamに置き換えらられるはずがない！　下にも同様のレポ。

When the Centos 8 news came out, I tried out Centos Stream against our configuration. Kickstart and Puppet config
needed very little change and I was able to bring up a VM in our lab config quite easily.
I have two observations:

1) Updates are sparse, none for ages then a large batch of version updates.
2) Stuff can be broken and remain so for a long while. We use Podman rootless. That was broken in the version of Stream
I initially installed and remained broken for a few weeks until the next chunk of updates. I looked up the issue in the RHEL
tracker and it had been fixed quickly in Fedora etc. but this did not make it to Stream on the same timescale.

My view is that Stream is exactly what RHEL say it is, a development distribution to which 3rd parties can contribute to
RHEL development and from which 3rd parties can base their own distributions. It's not for end users, or small
organisations that need timely security updates and other fixes and can't produce same themselves.

Update on CentOS Linux strategy (05.05.2021)

CERN and Fermilab have been evaluating a number of options in view of the sudden change of end of life of CentOS Linux 8 in December 2020 and the move to Stream. A migration path for servers already running CentOS Linux 8 is being provided to CentOS Stream 8 for those needing this release and latest features. Continued support for existing workloads on Scientific Linux 7 and CERN CentOS 7 will be maintained as previously planned. We are evaluating a number of scenarios for future Linux distributions such as community editions or academic licence options over the next 12 months as the shorter Stream lifecycle is not compatible with a number of use cases for the scientific program of the worldwide particle physics community.

CERNは5月の発表にもあるように通りCentOS8はCS8(CentOS8 Stream)への置き換えを進めてきた
今後はCS8が推奨OSになり、CS9がでたらそれもサポートする

CERN and Fermilab have been closely evaluating the Linux distribution landscape.
We observe that national cyber infrastructure organizations are increasingly
supporting more science domains, so in addition to LHC- or HEP-specific
considerations, it will be useful to have a choice that is widely recognized
and meets the needs of broader science research.

Red Hat has made a proposal to CERN regarding an academic licensing scheme.
Ultimately this would require significant overhead at external sites, and
therefore we have worries on this proposal’s attractiveness for other sites.

Going forward, we propose to target CentOS Stream as the standard distribution
for experiments. We feel that deploying CentOS Stream 8 is low risk, and we now
have months of experience running IT services and experiment offline workloads
on CentOS Stream 8 without any significant issues.
We feel that should issues arise with the adoption of CentOS Stream 8, it would
be straightforward to reevaluate other options before CentOS Stream 8 support
ends. CentOS Stream 8 is a supported distribution until May 2024. Trivial
migration paths are provided by the various ELC (Enterprise LinuxClone)
communities.

Continued support for existing workloads on Scientific Linux 7 and CERN
CentOS 7 will be maintained as previously planned.

Fermilab/CERN recommendation for Linux distribution

CERN and Fermilab jointly plan to provide AlmaLinux as the standard
distribution for experiments at our facilities, reflecting recent
experience and discussions with experiments and other stakeholders.
AlmaLinux has recently been gaining traction among the community due
to its long life cycle for each major version, extended architecture
support, rapid release cycle, upstream community contributions, and
support for security advisory metadata. In testing, it has demonstrated
to be perfectly compatible with the other rebuilds and Red Hat Enterprise
Linux.

CERN and, to a lesser extent, Fermilab, will also use Red Hat Enterprise
Linux (RHEL) for some services and applications within the respective
laboratories. Scientific Linux 7, at Fermilab, and CERN CentOS 7, at CERN,
will continue to be supported for their remaining life, until June 2024.

AlmaLinux focuses on Application Binary Interface compatibility (2023-07-18)

In response to Red Hat's recent announcement to restrict public source code releases to CentOS
Stream, the AlmaLinux Foundation has announced that they will drop the aim to be "bug-for-bug
compatible" with RHEL, and instead focus on Application Binary Interface (ABI) compatibility.
They will work to ensure that applications built to run on RHEL can run without any issues on
AlmaLinux, even in situations where package versions deviate slightly from those available

The end of Scientific Linux is near. Following the upstream release cycle:[1]
On June 30, 2024 Scientific Linux 7 will reach End of Life.
No security updates for SL7 will be published after June 30, 2024.
After June 30:
The installation trees will be moved into the 'obsolete' directory.
Kickstart and yum operations against the old repository locations will no longer work.
the official docker images for SL7 (docker pull sl:7) will be retired
A copy of the final docker image will be placed in the 'obsolete' directory under 7x/x86_64/os/images/docker.
The files themselves will remain available under the 'obsolete' directory.[2]
Users of Scientific Linux 7 should migrate to an actively maintained operating system. At Fermilab, AlmaLinux 9 is the recommended choice.[3]
AlmaLinux 8 is available for folks as well.[3]
